Mahakaleshwara Temple at Ujjain: Cosmic Significance and Reverence
In the sky resides the Taraka Linga, in the nether region exists the Haatkeshwara, and on the earth stands the Mahakaleshwara. We venerate these three lingas.The universe is often perceived as comprising three realms – The Sky, The Earth, and The Netherworld. Mahakaleshwar is revered as the lord of the earth, also known as the king of the terrestrial realm. Among the 12 Jyotirlingas, Mahakaleshwar holds the title of being the lord of the earth and death. The term ‘Mahakala’ is interpreted as ‘Lord of Time’ and ‘Lord of Death.Shri Mahakaleshwar is considered the oldest referenced Jyotirlinga in the Puranas; According to the Shivapurana, the temple was built eight generations prior to Nanda, Krishna’s guardian, coinciding with the establishment of the Jyotirlinga.
